The state legislature approved the measure, sent it to the governor for his signature, and then recessed, temporarily stopping work so the governor could work on statewide support for his plans. A special vote would be held on April 5, 1955. Governor Gary campaigned to the states’ voters to approve of the amendment for school funding. Members of the state legislature joined in the movement to persuade voters in what was called “SOS” which stood for “Support Our Schools.”
