However, his passing set off one of the bloodiest eras in English history as rivals vied for the throne, and William the Conqueror, who ultimately prevailed, brutally imposed his control on his new realm.
Following the passing of Harthacnut, Cnut the Great's son, Edward became king of England in 1042. Later reports attributed his accession to the throne to the Normans. There isn't much data to back this up, though. Edward gave Normans access to influential positions in England, including his nephew Ralph of Mantes. Edward's court was heavily international even while he encouraged Norman settlement in England to help him fight off internal foes like Earl Godwine of Wessex.
