If this is WW2 we're talking about, we have to remember that the US and the USSR were actually allies during the war. However, once they took down Germany, tensions grew. The US had a capitalistic economy while the USSR had communism. These different viewpoints fueled the Cold War and many people thought the human race would end via the detonation of atomic bombs.
