India is a secular state with no state religion. However, the country is characterized by a variety of religious practices and beliefs.

India is also the birthplace of four of the world's major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. The freedom of religion is a fundamental right in India and it is granted in their constitution.

Almost 80% of the population practise Hinduism, 15% practise Islam and the rest other religions ( Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and other ethical faiths).

Hinduism is the main indian religion, concentrating 90% of the world´s Hindu population.  Hinduism is both an Indian religion and dharma, meaning a way of life.
