El aumento de la presión de los "bárbaros", externos a la cultura romana, contribuyó en gran medida al colapso. Años relevantes en este contexto lo constituyen el año 117, cuando el Imperio alcanzó su mayor extensión territorial, y el ascenso de Diocleciano en el 284.

El Gobierno Romano se encontraba constantemente amenazado por la bancarrota, en parte debido al alto costo que demandaba el Imperio, y en parte también a su economía estancada, los elevados impuestos y una inflación que condujo al final inevitable del Imperio Romano.
