Read the excerpt from The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England. The Elizabethan theater as we know it develops slowly. I

n 1562 the play Gorboduc, the first English play to include blank verse, is performed in front of the queen at the Inner Temple in London. This is written by two gentlemen, Thomas Sackville (the future earl of Dorset) and Thomas Norton, and leaves a lasting impression. Its tale of a kingdom torn between two heirs has great significance for the audience of the day. Other plays follow, drawing on classical themes as well as on ancient British and medieval history, written by (among others) John Heywood, John Pickering, and Lewis Wager. A sign of their success is the construction in 1567 of the first purpose-built theater, the Red Lion, built by John Brayne in Whitechapel. Which event happened first? The Red Lion was built by John Brayne. Thomas Sackville became the earl of Dorset. John Pickering and Lewis Wager wrote new plays. Gorboduc was performed in front of the queen.

Answer:

Gorboduc was performed in front of the queen.

Explanation:

Ian Mortimer's "The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England" provides an insight into the life of England during the Elizabethan age. This book focuses mainly on the period of William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I.

As given in the passage, the speaker reveals that <em>"Gorboduc, the first English play to include blank verse" </em>was performed before the queen. This was in 1562, after which several similar plays were written by numerous writers, including John Pickering and Lewis Wager. Moreover, the speaker mentioned, within parenthesis, that the writer of the Gorbudoc play Thomas Sackville would later become <em>"the future earl of Dorset"</em>. This shows that the play came before the earldom.

Then, the construction of a new theater, "The Red Lion", was in 1567.

So, looking at the sequence of the years the events happened, we can conclude that the first event was the performance of the play "Gorbudoc".

Thus, the <u>correct answer is the last/ fourth option.</u>
