The Republic of China has 南京 / Nanjing / Nanking as its capital although since 1949, Taipei has served as its temporary capital.

Both 北京 / Beijing / Peking and 南京 / Nanjing / Nanking are located in Mainland China and both cities served as capital for Imperial China during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), Nanjing from 1368 to 1644 under the name of Yingtian; Beijing (then known as Beiping) as co-capital from 1403 and onwards under the name of Shuntian.
