Mesopotamia was the area along the shores of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates and the close surroundings. There were numerous empires that existed in this area, including the first civilization. They were all quite successful and some persisted for a very long time. The reason as to why civilizations developed and maintained civilizations here are the two aforementioned rivers.

The Tigris and Euphrates laid the basis for the creation of civilizations and empires and were of great help all the way. These two rivers made the empires stable economically and socially because they enabled large-scale food production with the highly fertile silt they were bringing. Having a surplus of food in an agriculturally-based economy is crucial. Freshwater was always available, and that is quite the luxury in the middle of a desert. Last but not least, the travel of people and transportation of goods was much faster and much easier through the waters of these rivers.
