All the information which appears before the comma (being from a small town in Wisconsin) seems to be related to the subway, and not to Matt, since "the subway" appears right after it. Obviously, the purpose was to use a modifier (the whole clause, in this particular case) in order to give information about Matt, and not about the subway. A better way to convey the idea originally intended would be:
Being from a small town in Wisconsin, Matt experienced the subway as something new.
You don't want to have the past repeat itself so you learn about it to know its effect on the world.
In the beginning of the book, Johnny is jumped by the Socs. This affects his behavior around the Socs because he is much more on edge and concerned for his safety. This results in his being more aggressive and violent in his dealings with the Socs. We see some of this fear and violence when the Socs pick up Cherry after the drive in movie. Johnny eyes the rings on Bob's fingers remembering how much damage they caused when he was jumped. This fear comes back when Bob is drowning Ponyboy in the fountain, and Johnny acts more violently because of it.
