Salim was an orphan boy who had come to take shelter in Masterjee's house during a furious monsoon storm, five years ago. He had stayed back to work for the old master craftsman. He was  thirteen years old. He was tall and strong, taller than other boys of thirteen.
                Masterjee gave him shelter. Seeing him at work, Salim was inspired to take up the work of sculpting stone. He told Salim that he was talented and would become one of the finest stonemasons of the country.
