Willie Colón was born in Haiti and grew up singing in church. In the early 1950s, he went to New York City to pursue a music career and joined a band known as Les Paul's Giants.

After impressing the bandleader with his vocal abilities, he was added into the group and began achieving success on both Latin American and U.S. stages.

In 1965, Colón recorded his breakout song "Guantanamera" which became an international hit that defined salsa for years to come.

He continued recording successful albums throughout the 1960s and 1970s before retiring from performing in 1981 due to health issuesrelatedto alcoholism .

However, his legacy lives on through his many fans who continue to love hearing him sing today!
