The belief/legend that Betsy Ross sewed the first "stars and stripes" to the American flag was a sought-after symbol of female Revolutionary patriotism. The Revolutionary War was going on at this time which led to women doing jobs men in the military usually did, therefore creating a new version of what women were thought to be able to achieve in their daily lives. This legend was purely thought to be true to push the idea of women supporting their men, country, and to strengthen the truth of what women could really do in America.
