What is a significant difference between an indentured servant and a slave?

History

Slaves worked for a person without anything in return and there was no time limit to their work. Slaves were sold like property.

Indentured servants signed contracts agreeing to work for a period of time (usually under 10 years) in exchange for something like their passage, shelter or even food.

There were a few laws protecting the rights of indentured servants. No laws to protect slaves' rights.

Hope this helps! :)
