The open sea is sometimes referred to as a blue desert because it is very low in nutrients and other living such as planktons both zoo planktons and phytoplankton are less in number.

Explanation:

The Open sea is an area of the sea where the amount of nutrients needed to enhance the life of marine organisms are very minimal. This is the reason it is called blue desert. The desert is a place where nutrients are lacking in good quantity making it difficult to get the much needed life. In terms of the open sea the planktons are usually not available in the needed quantities enough to drive life.
