What literary device does Oscar Wilde use in the title of his play The Importance of Being Earnest?
ira [324]

I think that the literary device used in the title of Oscar Wilde´s play is Pun.

A pun is a play on words that produces a humorous effect by using words that suggest two or more meanigns or by exploiting similiar sounding words with different meanings.

In the title "The Importance of Being Earnest" there is a pun in the word Earnest because it is a synonim of honest and sincere and sounds like Ernest, the firstly false name that the principal character, Jack used to have another life far away of his obligations.

I hope that this answer help you. Greetings.

valentina_108 [34]

Answer:

The protagonist wants us to learn how her family's past impacted their views, and the deep connection that she feels with her mother. This is obvious when the protagonists says that her mother tried to make her feel better after her fight with her father. Her mother was very supportive!!

Also, the protagonist's main purpose is to express herself as an American, due to the fact that she now lives in the United States. We learn that she is very happy to be able to express herself properly in this way when she says: "When I was done, I read over my words, and my eyes filled. I finally sounded like myself in English!"
