The different structures set up the characters' goals differently to the reader. In Passage 1, the reader finds out midway what the conflict is that affects how Sir Gawaine's goals are revealed. In Passage 2, the reader finds out immediately that Graham is about to lose his farm and how determined he is to keep it.
