Akkusativ = direct object
Genitiv  = Ownership
Her is a sentence that uses all four cases:
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch meines Vaters.
Ich = Nominativ
dem Mann = Dativ - indirect object
das Buch = Akkusativ - direct object
