Schubert: Franz Schubert was born in Vienna. His father was a schoolmaster. He was the earliest master of the Romantic art song. He was strictly a musical composer and did not hold any other official musical position. He was the first Viennese composer who earned his living writing musical compositions. He taught at his father's school in his later teen years and he was unhappy with the job. He composed some of his best works during this time. He wrote over 600 songs and also composed symphonies, masses, piano sonatas, and quartets. His works Erlkonig 1815 (The Erkling) is one of the finest examples of musical romanticism. His popular orchestral works include The Unfinished Symphony and The Great C Major Symphony. Die Forelle, a song about a trout, was one of his well-known works with a folk-songlike melody.
