The Amazon is much larger than the Mississippi and are located on different continents.
The Amazon flows through ( I think ) more jungle and rainforests where the Mississippi isn't located in land like that. ( there's literally a highway that follows it down )
Probably manufacturing. Farming used to be very prominent but then we switched to technology and lost our use for it as much.
The theory of the continental drift explained how the continents had shifted their original positions. Once all joined together, as a "Urkontinent." Many people thought it was the mountains making them sink, but then that was dismissed because continental rocks were too light to sink to the ocean floor.
