different reasons during the Middle Ages. Travelers included merchants, religious figures, and farmers. Travelers often had to travel through forests. Many of them travelled barefoot. These forests were often home to bandits. Traveling as a group kept them reasonably safe during the day, but they needed protection and food at night.
