The first impression is the best impression that one should make. Some even say the first impression is the last impression. Nobody wants to miss out on making a great opening impression as that can often be the decisive factor in determining whether there will be a second meeting or not.
Sources such as diaries though not very reliable can be used if there are a large amount of them showing the same date and event. Historical books written about the event especially those closer to the time would be able to help determine that the date is accurate as well.
