In Jane Eyre, St. John is a clergyman who befriends Jane after he found her in the streets. Jane comes to live with him and he eventually finds her a teaching job at a charity school. Jane inherits a massive fortune after her uncle, John Eyre dies and decides to share it with St. John and her newfound relatives.

After a couple of years, St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary. He offers Jane to marry him and travels there with her. Jane is saddened by this, as Rochester is her true love. However, she ultimately decides to go with him but not marry him.
