Betty is only ten years old and extremely scared of her father, Reverend Parris. <u>The reason behind her fear at this moment is her having been caught by Rev. Parris dancing in the woods in what seemed to be a ritual connected to witchcraft. Afraid of being punished, Betty falls ill, leading others to believe she has been bewitched. In fact, she is just frightened she will be punished. </u>"The Crucible" is set during the witch trials which, as is widely known nowadays, were cruel and unfair. It is understandable that Betty would be so afraid of the punishment that she would get sick.
