This was especially true after the Emancipation Proclamation, as Lincoln attempted to free slaves from the control of Confederate states. These citizens often acted ignorant or didn't appear to be paying attention when Southerners discussed their next military moves. African Americans would then relay this information to the Union commanders, giving them a strategic advantage.
