During the Anglo-Nepal war, the fort of Malaun was under the supervision and protection of Bhakti Thapa, a warlord, and commander under the kingdom of Nepal. It was his selfless efforts in protecting the territory of Nepal making him a patriot and martyr for the kingdom.

While the fort itself was under the control of Bhakti Thapa, the commander of the whole Western Region of Nepal, the nearby fort of Deuthal was still under the British, making the Malaun fort susceptible to an attack anytime. The fort was at stake, which was a risky situation. So, it was important and necessary to defend the fort so that the British troops don't move further into the Nepalese territory.
