La teoría celular es la piedra angular de muchos conceptos biólogicos, esta teoría sienta las bases de la biología moderna y permite entender la conformación de los sistemas biológicos, como así tambiénn la función clave que posee la célula, la unidad fundamental de todos los seves vivos. La teoría celular se compone de tres principios básicos: 1- todos los sistemas biológicos están compuestos por células (la célula es el bloque de construcción de todos los organismos vivos), 2- las células son sistemas abiertos capaces de intercambiar energía y materia con el entorno, y 3- todas las células has sido originadas a partir de la división de otras células, lo cual permite rastrear la evolución de la vida a partir de una célula primordial procariótica. Sin embargo, es importante resaltar que diferentes organismos están conformados por diferentes tipos de células. Por ejemplo, las plantas tienen células conformadas por paredes lo cual le otorga rigidez a la célula vegetal, mientras que las células animales no poseen paredes.
