This is because, at that time, the Puritan Church had almost total control over society in Massachusetts, regulating social, political and even economic issues. For this reason, the fact that a group of people have to some extent contradicted what this church said was a factor that could have given rise to the subsequent accusation of these women, as their ideologies challenged that of Puritanism.
