How did the Harlem Renaissance begin? And Why was it important for the Harlem Renaissance to establish a cultural identity for A
jok3333 [9.3K]

Answer:

The Harlem Renaissance began in 1920 as an intellectual, social and artistic explosion in Manhattan in Harlem which is known as the "Great Migration". It was considered as a golden age for African-Americans and their rich cultural heritage which was characterized by music,  literature, dance, art, etcetera.

It was important for the Harlem Renaissance to establish a cultural identity for African-Americans at that time because after the Civil War, the blacks were freemen and began to strive for political equality and adequate representation. They were largely successful, as some blacks served in Congress and denounced The Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 which also led to the Civil Rights Act in 1875. However, between 1890 and 108, the Democratic whites came into power in the South and passed Jim Crow laws which enforced segregation in the South. This caused a lot of African-Americans to move north to Harlem which is known as the "Great Migration"

What is the setting of the short story "Harrison Bergeron"?
ivolga24 [154]

"Harrison Bergeron" takes place in 2081, in the United States, and it's main point is the society depicted, that restrained critical thinking and creativity, as well as competition; in a distorted application of methods to achieve equality. They used devices to avoid clear thinking, masks to hide beauty with the purpose of placing people in the same level.

The characters are the Bergeron family in which the son, Harrison Bergeron, was so superior that no "containment" device could avoid his skills and appearance  to show up. In a tentative of changing the world and freeing the handicapped people, and after all that being their "King", Harrison defies the system and ends up being murdered by the commander of this new world: The United States Handicapper General. As no one could remember what happened on the moment before, even Harrison's parents who were watching the scene on TV, the world continued as it were.
