The American colonists tried to let King George III know about their grievances in several different ways before sending the Declaration of Independence to him.

1) Boston Tea Party- This event that happened in December 1773 was a result of the Tea Act. This act put a tax on British tea, which was a popular drink for the American colonists. To show their dissatisfaction with this law, American colonists boarded British ships and destroyed the tea. This showed King George III that the colonists were unhappy with his new law.

2) Olive Branch Petition- This letter sent by members of the Second Continental Congress discussed how the colonists were still loyal to the British as of July 1775. However, if King George III did not change his policies, the colonists threatened action.

The supreme court case that limited the government’s ability to suppress a news story is the Near v. Minnesota. This is where the freedom of the press has been violated by the law because the supreme court has set out prior restraints in terms with publication that violated the first amendment.
