He claims that it seems his experiences with this woman were part of a dream, which makes me think he WISHES it was a dream to lessen the heartache of her leaving. He attempts to hold onto the sand with all of his strength, yet it still slips through the cracks between his fingers. This symbolizes the inevitability of her departing, regardless of how much he pleads for her to stay. It reminds me a lot of a song called Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again by La Dispute, where a man's lover is torn from his grasp by the sea and he never recovers. The imagery in that song is beautiful.
