The ancient Israelites are thought to have been the first monotheistic people in the ancient Middle East. Yahweh's worship grew from ancestor worship and the combination of the Canaanite gods' three or four major gods. God sent prophets, too, according to the Israelites. These prophets were messengers who carried God's message to the people. The Israelites documented their religious ideas and history in their writings. Some of these works were later incorporated into the Hebrew Bible. These views eventually evolved into Judaism.
