Gaining a true appreciation for music can mean getting to know it, learning how music feels and how it's expressing it's emotions. It can also mean learning about the composers and what gave them the inspiration to write their music. Gaining an appreciation basically means to connect with the subject, so for music, it can mean that you want to learn everything there is to know. Such as musical periods (i.e baroque and romantic), composers (i.e Antonio Vivaldi and Ludwig van Beethoven), classical pieces (i.e Vivaldi's Summer and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata), and where the inspiration for the music came from. It also means to know what you, personally, like musically. Just because you don't like certain types of music doesn't mean you can't respect the music for what it is.
