-The theory of plate tectonics states that the Earth's solid outer crust, the lithosphere, is separated into plates that move over the asthenosphere

divergent- plates move away from each other

convergent-plates collide

transform- plates slide sideways past each other

-Magma from the underlying mantle erupts at the edges, then cools and solidifies to form new ocean crust.
