In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Cassie decided to seek revenge on Lillian Jean.

Explain why Cassie wanted revenge and provide reasons why it was or was not a good idea.
Use evidence from the text to support your response. You may also want to include whether or not you would have made the same decision as Cassie.

Suggested Paragraph Structure:

Introduction Paragraph:
Hook/SMURFS, Topic (what happened with Cassie and Lillian Jean), Thesis Statement
Body Paragraph: Reason 1 and Evidence
Body Paragraph: Reason 2 and Evidence
Conclusion Paragraph: Restate thesis. You may also want to include whether or not you would have made the same decision as Cassie. Be creative (SMURFS).

*Check spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.
*Use Wow Words and figurative language.
*Use “quotation marks” to cite your evidence.

Have you ever made the not-so-great decision to get revenge on someone? In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie Logan chose to get revenge on Lillian Jean Simms. Cassie chose to do this because one day Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean and she made her apologize. After she did, Lillian Jean tried to push her off the sidewalk. Since Lillian Jean couldn’t push Cassie off, her father came and pushed Cassie and forced her to apologize again. In my opinion, it was not a good idea to get revenge on Lillian Jean.

The first reason that it was a bad idea to get revenge is that Cassie could be putting her whole family in danger. Charlie Simms (Lillian Jean’s father) would be very angry at the Logans if he discovered his daughter got beat up by Cassie. He definitely would go after them. Cassie’s father also knows this. In chapter 8 he says, “This here's an important decision, Cassie, very
important - I want you to understand that - but I think you can handle it. Now, you listen to me, and you listen good. This thing. if you make the wrong decision and Charlie Simms gets involved, then I get involved and there'll be trouble.” This shows that Cassie’s father knows that if done wrong, Cassie’s revenge could have severe consequences. Also, Big Ma and Cassie’s mother know that something bad could happen from when Cassie’s uncle Hammer tried to go after Charlie Simms. In chapter 6 it states, “Hammer, Cassie's all right,' she cried. ‘Don’t go making unnecessary trouble !” Cassie’s mother says “unnecessary trouble” because she doesn't want anything to happen to Uncle Hammer.

The other reason why it was a bad idea to get revenge is that Lillian Jean could try to get back at Cassie. Lillian Jean might try to fight Cassie again. She was very angry at Cassie while they fought and wanted to hurt her as much as possible. In chapter 8 it states, “she fought as best she could”.
This shows that she wanted to hurt Cassie and could possibly want to try again. She also called Cassie names. Also in chapter 8, the text states, “she, expending her energy in angry, nasty
Name-calling” and “demanded an apology for all the names she had called me”. This shows how rude Lillian Jean was to Cassie and probably will be rude to her again if she tries to get back at her.

In conclusion, It was a very terrible idea for Cassie to get revenge on Lillian Jean in the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor. If I was Cassie, I would have just left it be, no matter how angry I was. This would probably be the best way to avoid trouble. If you’re thinking about getting revenge on someone, don’t do it! It most likely will not end well.
