Please post a response to Dr. B.'s questions below in standard, grammatically correct sentences. (Be sure to answer ALL aspects

of it in your VERY FIRST prompt.) Then, respond to one post from one of your classmates with which you disagree and explain why. (Remember to disagree with each other respectfully.) You will not be able to see your classmates' responses until you respond to Dr. B's questions. Your first post is worth 20 points and will be graded based on the specific examples you give from the readings. (Your first post should be at least 150 words long.) Describe your specific examples in your own words--do not use direct quotes from the readings. No citations are necessary. Your response to a classmate is worth 5 points and will be graded based on support of your argument with examples from the readings. (Keep in mind that your postings should convince Dr. B. that you read and understood what you've been reading.) Here is your prompt:
In "The Failure of German-Americanism" (link to document in Course Schedule), Reinhold Niebuhr makes several criticisms of German-Americans during World War I.

a) In your opinion, which one of these criticisms was his most compelling argument? Why? (Remember: You do not have to agree with Niebuhr to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of his arguments.)

b) Do you think any of his criticisms are relevant to immigrants in the U.S. today? If so, which criticism is valid and why? If not, why not?

What was the primary reason that the Northern Whigs joined with other citizens to form the Republican Party in 1854?
garri49 [273]
The Republican Party formed in 1854 to oppose the extension of slavery. Many of the people who joined the new party were "Conscience Whigs," northern Whigs dissatisfied with their party's attempts to restrain slavery's growth.

Southern Whigs who supported slavery had long fought with northern Whigs who opposed the institution, but the party remained together through the strong personalities of its leaders and agreement on other issues. However, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which gave territories the right to vote on whether to allow slavery, ripped the Whigs apart. A group of slavery opponents began meeting in 1854 to form a new party, and on March 20, 1854, they formed the Republican Party Although opposition to the expansion to slavery was their primary organizing issue, they also supported a number of related policies. They believed in giving western land to American farmers instead of selling it to pro-slavery plantation owners. Supporters of the new party also believed that a free market in labor encouraged civic virtue and economic growth This new party attracted disgruntled northern Whigs, northern anti-slavery Democrats and members of the Free Soil and American Parties Though the Republicans did not win the 1856 presidential election, their nominee John C Fremont did win 11 northern states. Four years later, the Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. Though he promised only to stop the expansion of slavery, the southern states seceded. This secession caused the Civil War which in turn led to the entire abolition of slavery in the United States

In your opinion who should have the createst responsibility for fighting climate change: governments, bus
Anit [1.1K]

The United Nations report on climate change released this week contains some dire news for humanity: It says we have less than two decades and plenty of hard work ahead to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid catastrophic consequences to the planet. In response to the report, some outlets have made lists of what individuals can do to personally combat climate change, from limiting their meat consumption to carpooling or taking public transportation. Others, however, have argued that individual consumption changes are futile since 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to 100 companies, according to a 2017 “Carbon Majors” report by the Climate Accountability Institute.

Both arguments make sense. Individual consumers can’t be blamed for our rising global temperatures — but people want to feel like they’re doing something, no matter how small, to prevent the worst-case climate catastrophe scenario from unfolding. I spoke to Richard Heede, the co-founder and co-director of the Climate Accountability Institute, which produced the Carbon Majors report, about the companies that played the biggest part in creating our current situation and what role, if any, individuals have in determining our future. Our conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.
