Their strategy:. Avoid defeat until the Americans gave up

While the United States held a tremendous advantage in funding and firepower, the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong held the advantage of fighting for goals they believed in and knowing how to hold their ground in Vietnamese territory. They did not have to gain a conclusive victory over the USA in its support of South Vietnam, only hold out until the American side determined the war was no longer worth what it cost in dollars and lives.

When Jimmy Carter took the presidency of the United States the economy was improving slowly. The U.S, recession of that time had been caused by the oil embargo, so President Carter’s idea to improve the economy of the nation was to reduce the dependence of foreign energy and petroleum.

Ideologically, it was greatly influenced by the ethics and philosophy of Confucianism, although traces of Legalism and Daoism from the earlier Zhou Dynasty remained. Under Emperor Wudi (141–86 BCE), China regained control of lands first conquered by Emperor Qin Shihuang, including parts of southern China and northern Vietnam.
