This was considered "guts" because it is difficult not to stand up for yourself, especially in the eye of the public. However, being in the eye of the public was exactly why he could not stand up for himself; he could not react or his actions would be turned against him. This idea could be treated a multitude of ways today. The idea of not reacting could be seen as both strong will or just being a pushover.
