Diane L. Eck asks, "What religious attire may one wear? A cross? Yarmulke? Head scarf? Turban?" (par.1). What is the rhetorical
Anarel [89]

Diana L. Eck is an American scholar of religious studies and professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies at Harvard University. She is also the Director of The Pluralism Project at Harvard.

In this excerpt, the order in which she presents the items serves a rhetorical purpose. The items are listed in order of how "accepted" they are in mainstream American society. Christianity (a cross) is well-accepted, while Judaism (yarmulke) is still omnipresent, but more contentious. As she goes on, the list would appear more and more exotic to American readers. The question therefore is successful in testing the limits of religious plurality.

What did you learn about capitalization? Give the types of capitalization and give 2 examples each.
zysi [14]

Answer:

Capitalize proper nouns—and adjectives derived from proper nouns.

Examples:

the Golden Gate Bridge

the Grand Canyon

a Russian song

a Shakespearean sonnet

a Freudian slip

With the passage of time, some words originally derived from proper nouns have taken on a life, and authority, of their own and no longer require capitalization.

Examples:

herculean (from the mythological hero Hercules)

quixotic (from the hero of the classic novel Don Quixote)

draconian (from ancient-Athenian lawgiver Draco)

The main function of capitals is to focus attention on particular elements within any group of people, places, or things. We can speak of a lake in the middle of the country, or we can be more specific and say Lake Michigan, which distinguishes it from every other lake on earth.

Match each writer to the romantic trait reflected in his poems.
Mademuasel [1]

Answer:

 • Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Fantasy and supernatural.
 • William Wordsworth: Healing power of nature.
 • William Blake: Mysticism and spirituality.
 • Thomas Gray: Aspirations and potential of all human beings.

The Romantic period was a literary movement that arose as a reaction to the Enlightenment. While the Enlightenment emphasized concepts such as logic and reason, the Romantics attempted to rescue those "human" traits that were less remarked upon. They focused on the individual, the magical, the supernatural, the traditional and the emotional. All of these writers contributed, in different ways, to this period.
