It produced the upheaval in many Eastern European countries and led to increased crime rates and corruption within the Russian government.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Five Central Asian countries gained independence — Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Relations between the steppe nomads and the settled people in and around Central Asia were marked by conflict.

8. In the recent past, during the 1980s, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a significant role in inserting U.S. influence in Afghanistan by funding military operations designed to frustrate the Soviet invasion of that country.
