Show MoreFamily Cooking Night The community group I visited was called Family Cooking Night. The event was hosted by Baptist Health of South Florida and Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth (FLIPANY). Baptist Health hosted a 6-month series event called My Optimal Wellness, through their Nutrition and Community Wellness department, Family Cooking Night was the last event of the series. It took place at a local YMCA in the Weston area, it was free of charge and opened to YMCA members and non-members. The purpose of this event was to help inspire families to prepare nutritious and tasty meals that were quick and simple to prepare. She showed the My Plate and explained how one can incorporate all the food groups into one meal. In order to get the audience’s participation, she asked what popular food do their kids usually ask for and how can they fit the food groups into that specific food. The popular food among their children was pizza. Using the My Plate together we provided different ideas on how to make a pizza healthier by using whole-grain flour for the dough and using low-fat cheese. The lecture was about 20 minutes long and was followed by the demonstration part with Chef Jennifer Da Silva where she demonstrates a recipe that incorporated the food groups discussed. The recipe she prepared was called “Festive Hearty Salad” she explained each ingredient that was going into the salad; the name, how it’s best prepared and proper storage. Participants were also encouraged to ask her questions as she was preparing the dish, one of the questions asked was how the dish can be modified for vegetarian or kosher she gave tips on how one can change the dish to accommodate to their specific diet.
