A From the year Columbus discovered the Americas, the continent was floded with European colonists who were looking for land they could rob from the natives. These colonist were also called settlers.

B In the case of the U.S. the settlers (mainly english) expanded all over the East coast. They were doing very well (after having removed the natives and introduced slavery) but due to some disagreements (largely economic ones) with the British Empire these colonist decided to break free and declare Independence.
