The Hagia Sophia was one of the largest Christian churches of the eastern Byzantine empire. It was built in 537 as a patriarchal cathedral for the capital city of Constantinople.
The famed Christian monument was designed by Isidore of Miletus, who was a famous scientist and mathematician, and Anthemius of Tralles. Their first commission to build the monument came from emperor Justinian I and was the first to have a hemispherical dome with pendentives over the central portal.
