  • Africans were forced to convert to Christianity.
  • Africans were forced to see their homelands and origins as pagan and diabolical elements.
  • Africans were forced to see their skin and conditions as symbols of sin.

This religious violence aimed to justify slavery. For this reason, colonists taught slaves that slavery was a blessing programmed by God to lead Africans out of paganism and allow them to receive divine salvation.

However, even becoming Christians, Africans were seen as sinful elements that represented non-Christian precepts.
