The answer would be C, different economics, because the northern states were going through an economic boom, due to industrialization. The southern states were running on slave labor.
I think it’s all of the above because they all granted land in the present day lower states to the US :)

Percy Julian was a doctor living under Jim Crow, who pioneered the drug industry.
