Germany and Italy were the original European members of the Axis powers and even though Germany had to keep saving Italy on account of the Italian military being weak, they were still a very important ally to Germany.

After defeating Hitler in Germany, the Allies invaded Europe through Italy and as they fought on, the Italians removed their leader Mussolini and surrendered to the U.S. and British Forces. Germany however invaded the northern part of the country and a very slow struggle to defeat the Germans ensued.
