The use of atomic bombs lead to a quicker end to World War 2.

After Germany was defeated, the full attention of the Allies was turned on Japan. U.S strategist estimated and calculated that if an invasion of Japan was done, there would be a large waves of attacks of suicide civilians who would fight to the death that could potential cost 1-2 million Ally soldier lives. The U.S decided to find another way and they had the means to. So the U.S gave a message to Japan to surrender but they refused.

So on August 6th, 1945. Harry Trueman gave the word to unleash and use the top secret Manhattan project (development of nuclear bombs). On that day, the airplane, named Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in war on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

Three days later, on August 9th, another bomb was dropped on the Japanese city Nagasaki. Within a month, Japan surrendered unconditionally with the acception of allowing the Emperor to continue as emperor.

Note: This hits deep into my family. My grandpa was living in Hiroshima as a U.S citizen but he somehow through a feeling or some higher being got weak/sick and heard a voice to go to a recovery center on another island. But when he did, later that day/next day, the bomb fell and he escaped from the bomb. Although he lost everything he knew in Japan...
