And back then some religions had taught that there was a creature who supported the earth, or that at some point you'd fall off of the earth if you traveled to the "edges" of it.
Also Isaiah 40:22 speaks of the earth as a sphere, and yet still centuries later Christopher Columbus had the idea that the earth was flat.
These are just few of the many undeniable facts that the bible has long before scientists and scholars had discovered and put down in records.
Also, there are prophesies that are foretold in the scriptures, even prophesies that are included about what is happening today and what will happen in the future to make things better for mankind.

Later on, I assume she witnessed someone else get hurt or realized the true danger of the activity and realized she's actually glad she isn't involved in a harmful way. The inference I can make is that her opinion on the dangerous activity, whatever it may be, has changed due to someone or something else's suffering.
