On March 15th of 2018, I was on a family trip with my family to the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina. People from all around the world gathered on the platforms around the glacier. Patiently and expectantly waiting for the collapse of a large section of the Perito Moreno's glacier. A phenomenon, which happens every two or four years.
The place itself is breathtaking, a large withe and blue mass of ice that seems infinite and colossal. I remember walking through the platforms deciding with my family were to set, to have the best view for when the collapsing happens. After deliberating for some minutes, we decided on a spot where we had an extensive view of the glacier. Now we had to wait. Long hours passed, I talk with my brother with our eyes set on the glacier. We drank hot chocolate with our eyes still on the glacier. We eat sandwiches with our eyes on the glacier. We wait for hours, expectantly, listening to the sounds of small chunks of ice collapsing into the water somewhere in the desolate and vast glacier.
The night came, and with it the light of the moon to show us the glacier shining under the dark sky. Tired and thinking that maybe it would not collapse, we started to pack our things. Then suddenly, it happened. A colossal piece of the Perito Moreno, which looked just like a bridge, fell, impacting violently into the cold water and splashing small pieces of ice. Disturbing other small pieces of ice that were floating there. The sound that it made was similar to a cascade of cracking eggs shells followed by thunder and a big explosion.
Up to these days, it amazes me the power of nature and how lucky I was to have witnessed that spectacular phenomenon. I remember having no words or similar experiences to compare to it or express how I felt, and I still can hardly grasp what I have witnessed.
