The function of the work "Luncheon of the boating party" is to show an everyday and peaceful occasion among friends who are enjoying a moment of relaxation, on a pleasant, fresh and happy afternoon. This is possible to see through the presentation of the relaxed clothes, the animated countenance of the reproduced people. In addition, this feeling is intensified by the contrast between light and shadow.

The work has many natural elements and the presence of still life is more evident in the whole painting. To portray nature, we can see that the painter used a thick layer of paint to reproduce the intensity of the vegetation.
