Around the 1800s in Georgia, following the abolition of slavery, lower demands of cotton generally worldwide, and the government focus on industrialization instead of cotton farming. Many small farmers and poor whites found themselves struggling to survive. This led many of them to work as sharecroppers and LIVED IN THE BACKCOUNTRY due to their dire economic situations.
